Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument is the site of many stories of natural and cultural history. Originally devoted to the commemoration of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the site is also a treasure trove of natural history, preserving rare Mediterranean plant communities and world-famous tidepools. The Henley Company designed 35 wayside exhibits for the monument, addressing the wide range of interpretive stories using principles of Universal Design.
The team developed content in concert with our Spanish language consultant, to be sure that the message would read equally well for both English- and Spanish-speaking visitors. The team spent a week at the monument to become familiar with the resource, views, and storyline. Tactile elements were incorporated to provide varied learning experiences. Audio descriptions interpreted the views, tactile elements, and wayside graphic components for visitors with visual disabilities. The Park team decided that Spanish translations would be written to convey conceptual intent, rather than necessarily providing a literal word-for-word translation.
The Henley Company provided original subject and image research, writing and editing of bilingual text and audio description scripts, and audio recording of the audio descriptions.
