The team worked closely with a dual client (the Cherokee Heritage Center and the Cherokee Nation) to create a plan optimizing existing assets of the site and introducing new, stylistically-compatible, LEED certified, and interpretively-symbiotic structures to meet the project mission. Among these were historic re-creations of an 1850s girls school, a period barn and stables, as well as a contemporary performing arts building and amphitheater remodel.
Interpretive plans for the exterior included a landscaped scale model walking tour of the Trail of Tears routes, complete with water features representing rivers along the route. An active archaeological site was interpreted using section viewing and wayside exhibits interpreting the ongoing excavations. Interior interpretation was expanded to include a touch sensitive, interactive gateway map linking to interagency cultural tourism sites throughout the county. The team conceptualized an Orientation Theater experience, using cutting edge special effects and media.
